Mercedes-Benz unveiled a major update to its Operating System Strategy today, announcing the development of its own proprietary operating system called MB.OS. The chip-to-cloud architecture will offer features like navigation and maps from Google, as well as the integration of lidar technology from Luminar Technologies in a multi-billion dollar deal.
The new operating system is designed to be standardized across Mercedes’ entire portfolio of vehicles, including electric vehicles, by mid-decade when the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform arrives. MB.OS will feature full upgradeability and constant improvements, allowing Mercedes to retain full control over the relationship with its customers while protecting their privacy.
The automaker has also partnered with NVIDIA to provide its Orin system-on-chip to enhance benchmark SAE Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving systems. This will be supported by Luminar’s Iris lidar technology, which has already been implemented in Polestar 3 SUV pre-orders and Volvo’s upcoming EX90.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius spoke on the new operating system: “At Mercedes-Benz, we are dedicated to building the world’s most desirable cars. Accordingly, we made the decision to be the architects of our own operating system – a unique chip-to-cloud architecture that leverages its full access to our vehicles’ hardware and software components. By combining this in-house expertise with a selection of world-class partners, we will create an outstanding customer experience, from driving assistance, navigation and entertainment, all the way to integrated charging.”
Luminar Technologies Inc. has also announced that Mercedes-Benz has significantly increased its investment in their partnership to incorporate Iris lidar technology into its next generation of vehicles. The companies have been in close collaboration for over a year, and Luminar will unveil the next-generation version of its Iris lidar system during its Q4 and full-year report next Tuesday.
