Despite a brief pause in production, Ford is ramping up its electric vehicle (EV) production this year in response to overwhelming demand. The automaker is aiming to triple F-150 Lightning production and double Mustang Mach-E production by the end of 2023.
Ford sold 61,575 EVs last year, making it the second-largest electric vehicle maker in the US, behind only Tesla. However, the company encountered some issues this year after pausing production on its popular F-150 Lightning in early February due to a battery issue. Ford has since fixed the issue and plans to restart production on March 13 at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center.
Ford is looking to meet the strong customer demand by increasing its EV production. The automaker said in a press release Friday that it will “boost production of its popular EVs” after a “strong start to 2023 sales.” Ford aims to reach a 150,000 annual run rate for F-150 Lightning and 210,000 annual run rate for Mustang Mach-E by the end of this year.
Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue, says the increase “benefits both our customers and our business.” Despite the production halt, the automaker says overall F-150 Lightning production is on track to triple this year, selling 3,600 through February.
Ford has been increasing its EV production for the past two years and is now aiming to manufacture over 360,000 EVs this year. Although it may sound like a significant increase, it’s still not enough to keep up with the demand.
The Lightning is an incredible vehicle; hopefully, Ford can get back on track and deliver this year once the issues are fixed. There are a lot of customers waiting for Ford vehicles to be delivered.
