This weekend, Sydney will be the host of Fully Charged Live, the world’s biggest electric vehicle show. At the event, Perth-based Electro Nautic will be showcasing their two-seater electric hydrofoil, the WaveFlyer.
The WaveFlyer is powered by a twin electric hydrofoil propulsion system and an A-tail layout, which creates unmatched active stability and manoeuvrability. Weighing in at 200kg and with a top speed of 40 km/h, the craft has a cruising time of 4.5 hours and a range of 100km when foiling.
The WaveFlyer also has three modes: Cruise Mode, Performance Mode and Shallow-water Mode. Cruise Mode is designed for stability, while Performance Mode is like piloting a fighter jet on the water. Shallow-water mode retracts the foils to navigate shallow water and beaches.
The company says that the hydrofoil combined with electric propulsion and active stability control systems means that WaveFlyer uses 75% less power than conventional boat hulls. This equates to four times the range for an electric boat with the same battery capacity.
CEO and cofounder of Electro Nautic Joshua Portlock says that the company’s target market is the recreational industry and that they have received dozens of expressions of interest from companies enquiring about rental fleets to be rented out at resorts around the world.
At Fully Charged Live, visitors will be able to experience the WaveFlyer first-hand and learn more about its innovative technology. Daniel Bleakley, a clean technology researcher and advocate with a background in engineering and business, will also be present to discuss the potential of electric vehicles, renewable energy, manufacturing and public policy.
