BorgWarner, a leading global automotive supplier, has announced that it will provide 800 V silicon carbide (SiC) inverters to a major global OEM. This is in addition to the 400 V inverters that the company already supplies to the OEM. The two variants of the inverters include a 250 kW version for passenger cars and all-wheel-drive crossovers, and a 350 kW module for performance vehicles.
The company’s Viper-based silicon and SiC power modules provide 400 V and 800 V inverters with low mass, high efficiency, excellent scalability and high power densities. The inverters are customizable from 150 to 350 kW. Production of the new inverters is expected to begin in 2025, with peak annual volume near 400,000 units.
Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, said, “As a current 400-volt inverter supplier to the automaker, it was a significant win for our team to be brought on for the 800-volt program as well.” This new agreement will help BorgWarner expand its presence in the automotive industry and further strengthen its position as a leading supplier of powertrain components.
