Swedish electric boat maker Candela has secured SEK210 million (around $A30.4 million) in new funding to accelerate the launch of its P-12 electric hydrofoiling ferry. The P-12 is designed to be a 30-passenger ferry, capable of travelling up to 60 nautical miles (around 110 kilometres) at a cruising speed of 27 knots. It uses approximately 80% less energy than a traditional vessel, making it an attractive option for coastal, archipelago, or lake-based transport.
Gustav Hasselskog, Candela’s founder and CEO, believes the P-12 will be a “game changer in public transportation”. He explains that the ferry will be faster and cheaper than land transport like bus lines, and profitable for operators from day one. The Swedish capital of Stockholm is planning to start a nine-month trial of the P-12 this year, and Hasselskog is expecting smaller ferries like the P-12 will start to replace larger vessels, and even road travel.
Candela has also partnered with fellow Swedish electric pioneer Polestar, incorporating the company’s batteries in the Candela C-8. The two companies announced their partnership back in August 2022 and launched the first C-8 ‘powered by Polestar’ electric watercraft earlier this year.
The new funding secured by Candela will help to accelerate the launch of the P-12 electric hydrofoiling ferry, which promises to revolutionise public transportation. With its ability to travel up to 60 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 27 knots, while using 80% less energy than a traditional vessel, the P-12 is set to be faster and cheaper than land transport like bus lines. The nine-month trial planned for Stockholm this year will be a key indicator of the success of the P-12, and could pave the way for its widespread adoption in other cities around the world.
