Who says electric vehicles (EVs) can’t do the same job as gas-powered trucks? Ford’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup is proving that EVs can do just as much and more than their gas-powered counterparts. With over 200,000 reservations since its release in 2021, the F-150 Lightning is quickly becoming the go-to truck for those looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle.
Lightning owners are using their electric pickups for more than just hauling and towing. They are using them for home projects, camping, and even to power a movie set deep in the woods. This is a stark contrast to how gas-powered F-150 owners use their trucks.
Recently, Ford gathered consumer data (anonymized to ensure confidentiality) to compare how F-150 Lightning owners use their trucks compared to gas-powered F-150 owners. The data shows that Lightning owners are using their truck beds significantly more than gas-powered model owners. They are using them for home projects, camping, and hauling activities more often than ICE drivers.
In addition, Ford also collected data on customers who decided to go with another brand to learn precisely what buyers are looking for. The data revealed that 74% of Lightning owners use the truck once a month for home projects like landscaping, renovations, and more, compared to just 51% of ICE owners that reported doing the same. 48% of Lightning owners go camping once a month, including storing bikes, camping equipment, kayaks, etc., compared to 40% of gas-powered truck drivers.
Jason Mase, cross-vehicle and electrification marketing strategy lead (US) at Ford, told the Detroit Free Press: “People who may have wanted a pickup in the past seem to feel that having an electric option like the Lightning has given them permission to buy one, so now they haul muddy stuff that could have ruined a sport utility vehicle or something without a big truck bed, which can be hosed down.”
The F-150 Lightning is proving that EVs can do just as much and more than their gas-powered peers. With 90% of Lightning buyers coming from non-electric, non-hybrid, non-PHEV vehicles, it’s clear that the F-150 Lightning is attracting people who wouldn’t typically buy a truck otherwise.
Ford needs to produce more Lightnings to meet the growing demand. Despite an ongoing production halt from early February that will end on March 13, Ford says it plans to triple Lightning sales this year to reach a 150,000 annual run rate.
The F-150 Lightning is revolutionizing the truck industry and proving that EVs are up to the task.
