South Australia is leading the way in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with the launch of its first “border-to-border” network this week. Developed by Chargefox, the network consists of 140 charging stations, including 86 AC fast chargers (up to 7kW output) and 54 DC Rapid (up to 150kW) and Ultra-Rapid (up to 200kW) charging stations. The first 12 sites have already been opened, with the remaining sites expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
The Royal Automobile Association of South Australia (RAA) is partnering with the state government to make the network available to EV drivers. To use the RAA Charge network, drivers must download the Chargefox app to locate the closest site, where they can charge their vehicle and pay. The network will span from Bordertown to the Border Village and from Mount Gambier up to Marla.
At the launch of the charging station at the Marion Holiday Park, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “At a time when petrol prices are stubbornly high, South Australia has abundant renewable energy, particularly in the middle of the day. Electric vehicles will play a crucial role in storing that energy and using it productively. By helping fund this broad scale charging network and abolishing the Liberals’ ill-thought-out tax of electric vehicles, we’ll ensure we continue to lead the nation.”
The RAA Charge network is powered by renewable energy and is part of AMS Group’s commitment to clean energy. AMS Group now owns Chargefox and plans to grow its public network to 5000 plugs, including 2000 fast chargers, by 2025. This rollout in South Australia will help to increase the take-up of electric vehicles in the state and also eliminate range anxiety and support tourism.
